Strengthening School Mediation Across Europe: A Learning Journey in Lagos, Portugal

From May 6th to 10th, educators and student mediators from four European countries and Turkey gathered in Lagos, Portugal, for the fourth international mobility of the project Inclusive Schools through Mediation. This initiative, co-funded by the European Union, aims to promote inclusive education by equipping schools with effective mediation strategies to address conflict and build more harmonious learning environments.

During the five-day event, participants engaged in a rich exchange of experiences, exploring how mediation is implemented in various educational contexts. Educators and students worked side by side, reflecting on the impact of peer mediation in classrooms and identifying practical approaches to strengthen its integration within school systems.

A key focus of the mobility was the analysis of case studies involving real-life conflict scenarios. Through group discussions and collaborative problem-solving, participants examined strategies to reach win-win solutions that foster respect, empathy, and constructive dialogue among students.

The program also included a visit to local authorities and a guided tour of the city of Lagos, providing a broader context for reflection on how inclusion and mediation values can extend beyond schools and into the wider community.

The mobility concluded with a Portuguese cultural evening and a diploma ceremony, marking the end of a meaningful and collaborative experience for all involved.

This international exchange underscored the importance of core values such as collaboration, respect, tolerance, and peaceful conflict resolution. These principles remain essential for building inclusive schools where every student feels heard, valued, and empowered.
